So, you all must go see Master and Commander, if you haven't yet. Because it's good. Great, even. I'm probably going to see it again in this upcoming week. And it's slashy as all hell, barely any women at all in the whole movie. It's wonderful really.
So some recs.
The Prizes over Discovery series by Keiko is good. The writing style fits well with the time period and O'Brian's own style. Plotwise, it's good, but either in the pacing or the plot itself, something still feels like it's missing. Over all though, a good read.
astolat has written a good amount of M&C slash, which can be found at her website. You HP folks might remember Shalott from her amazing Weather of the Heart series. She's probably the best writer in this (small) fandom, and I'm desperately in love with her Five Things that Never Happened series. Especially the Aubrey/Maturin in Space AU.
jacito is a new addition to the fandom, she's posted a fic called Retrace the Stars which is a complete gem. It's short, but the style is effortless.
wearemany writes in ten million different fandoms, and her addition to the M&C fandom, The Butcher's Bill, is a wonderful look at Jack and Stephen's dynamic. It's got such a good atmosphere, and provides great insight into the other side of battle.
Nesting Place by Destina was written for the Yultide secret santa thing, it's short but lovely, a nice veiw of Jack when he's not at sail.
Another Yultide story, Undertow is even shorter than Nesting Place, written by Cori Lannam, it's such a cute glimpse of Jack and Stephen at their most relaxed.
Fanfiction.net has a Master and Commander section *cue scary music now* but after checking it out I did find a few stories that are pretty good. The first is Misguided Bullets by Faye Dartmouth, it's a nice look at what was going on in Jack's head when Stephen is shot and is very well written.
The second story, by Sun Queen, Albatross, is another story that tries to fill in the blanks surrounding Jack's fight with Stephen and his subsequent shooting. She also wrote another part called Blood Moon.
And now a rec of a different sort. This one's a rpg that's just gotten started.
holding_fast is the main journal but you're probably bet so read
_stephenmaturin's friendslist to get the whole game in one go. I really like the style of this rpg, it's not a format I've really seen before, the posts are all in story/narrative form, but the writing is wonderful, and the character studies are wonderful. This rpg can also be followed by reading my friendslist filter for it.
In terms of lj communities,
perfect_duet is a good one, as is
hms_surprise.
I need an M&C icon, I think.
