cali: (books (calendae))
I'm definitely a binge-style book reader. I go on binges where I'll read a ton of books all in a row and then I'll have other periods where I don't read very many books at all (but I'm pretty much always reading fanfic). I usually kick-start a reading binge when I stumble upon a really fantastic book that reminds me why I love actual, physical, paper books so much.

I definitely stumbled upon one of those fantastic books the other day. It's called His Majesty's Dragon by [livejournal.com profile] naominovik You can read the first chapter here on the website. I'd have a hard time pegging this story without underselling it but it's fabulous. Historical fiction with a fantasy twist. It's set during the Napoleanic Wars except instead of just the famous battles between sailing ships, the war is being fought in the air too. With dragons. His Majesty's Dragon is the first in a trilogy and it's so, so good. Everything I loved about Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series and Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. Characters you'll love and a world so rich you can smell it.

This is the sort of book that makes me want to read more books. I'm probably going to start on Michael Chabon's The Final Solution next.
