cali: (slept with her in a dream last night)
This is absolutely everything I can remember about the Sean and Elijah Q&A FotR screening from Sunday Night.

Sean and Elijah enter a few minutes late, the audience was told that they were just trying to get a few more minutes of relaxation in before they came out, as they had been signing autographs from 9:45 that morning.

Both boys run around the theatre three times before getting to their stools.

Get to their stools, Elijah: ok, I'm winded, but we've been sitting down all day! [audience "awww's" and claps]

Elijah see's [livejournal.com profile] marysiak's picture of him, she gets up to give it to him, gets a hug. This sparks off a whole series of people going up to give Sean and Elijah presents.

Someone gives Sean a sparkly black cowboy hat, grinning he puts it on. Elijah gets a red one. At the same time, people throw them candy. Boys joke about eating candy given to them by strangers and Sean sings "Rhinestone Cowboy".

Boys ask where everyone are from, Sean starts listing countries, "Scotland? Russia? Bit of Earth? France? etc."

Both of them try to decide if it's time to start answering questions. I was sitting front row on the far left wall, and I had my hand up. Sean and Elijah look at me, come to some sort of an agreement, and the Sean says, "ok lets start over on this end [points to me] and work our way over"

I ask how they fell about the commercialization of LotR and the merchandise. Elijah says that they do have some limited say in the merchandise. Sean looks straight at me and answered.

He talked about how at first, especially after the Burger King promotion he was like, "is this selling out? yes. It really is selling out" but at the same time, Tolkien said he wanted to create a mythology for the British people and Sean explained that he believes that mythologys have to be sustained and passed on and reinterpreted in order to stay alive, so while the commercialization could be a bad thing, it has encouraged countless people to read Tolkien's books. he also said that if he thought that the people who were involved in the movies were just in it for the money he "wouldn't be able to look himself in the face", and Elijah agreed that the people who made the video games etc. all have a passion for the books and the movies. And they both agreed that everyone involved really cares a lot about Tolkein and the books. Sean said that he is proud of the work they've put in.

The second question went to Pippa who was sitting next to me. She asked if either of them were interested in pursuing theatre in the future.
Elijah said that he hasn't stretched that muscle yet, but he's interested in doing theatre work in the future. He did say that he was scared to do it. Sean said that his mom and dad are really into theatre but that he hasn't been bitten by that bug nearly as much. He also discussed some of the differences between movies and stage said that one reason some people don't do theatre is that especially when you have kids, it's a lot easier to do movies because the pay was better and it's a bit more stable.

WARNING: at this point I've got no clue which questions came when so im just listing them as I remembered them.

Bit of Earth Website representative. Sean asked if they noticed his shoutout during the "where's everyone from?" thing. Asks about costumes, how the backpack straps didn't interfere with the cloaks.
Sean: backpacks? You mean backpack, [Elijah laughs]. Both explain that the straps were very complicated because the costuming people "didn't want them to disrupt the look of the cloak" (Elijah quoted with hand quotes and much mocking). Said that they tied under their backs and that there were holes in the backs of the cloaks for them. Also discussed Elven Brooch Stabbings (said they stabbed their necks). Sean said that he didn't know why but for some reason his brooch was always flipped from the rest of the hobbits' brooches. [The audience gives a general "oh yeah"] Sean: "you guys knew that? Y'all should get out more" [laughter]

The One Ring.Net question about attendance at the TORN Oscar party.
Elijah didn't know anyone was going the first year, and was filming in NY last year. Both said that they want to go this year.

Sean says that Dom is living with his brother Mackenzie for two years, and said that he sold Dom his 92 BMW that "needed a new top, but I told him that". Sean says that they're all "keeping it in the family."

Q about Sean leaving "The Goonies" dvd commentary.
Sean explains that he had told them that he had an appointment but they cut out his explanation.

Q about favorite movie they've been in.
Sean jokes that Elijah's was "Flipper". Elijah: "You just had to bring Flipper up. I did that for the dolphins, man!" Elijah's real answer: "The Ice Storm" Sean said that he couldnt go to the bathroom after that movie, and Elijah says "it's all molecules man, think about it, we really eat our own shit" [audience and Sean groan]

Q about Elijah's favorite Pumpkins song.
A I don't remember.

Q about importance of music to them.
Elijah: it was phenominally important, especially when they were rapping out at the end of the day and they'd get all the energy of "all right we've just done a 15 hour day, we get to go home" Sean: or out drinking.

Q to Lij about meeting Ozzy Osbourne.
Elijah was really excited, but couldn't understand a word he said. Lij said that he got nervous right before he met him though, cause he was worrying about not understanding him. Said that he just kind of smiled and nodded, tried to work out what was being said.

Q Ultimate person to work with?
A. I don't remember. Lij listed some directors, Scorcese etc.

Q about the smell of the costumes.
A the hobbit costumes were not nearly as bad as certain would be kings. Elijah liked the smell of his because it reminded him of Frodo, helped him feel more like the character. Which is not to say that it's smell might have offended others.

Q about whether they knew the smells of the other hobbits costumes.
A. Much joking about hobbits being "in touch with each others pheromones" they can "tell when the other hobbits are randy".

Q what do they do with their presents from fans?
A. The definitely keep them. Sean said that at one comiccon he got a signed first edition of a book which I cannot remember right now. He said that it inspired him to start a rare books collection.

Q about injuries.
A. Sean's sure we've all heard about the foot incident. But he can't remember which one it was. Elijah jumps up, goes "wait, wait," [grabs Seans right foot, kneels a bit, grabs his left foot, kneels a bit] and then goes, "yup, it was this one [points to left foot] definitely, I can remember playing with your blood" and then he goes on to explain about how he wasfascinated by Seans blood clot and was poking it with a stick. The Sean says that Pete Jackson was like "Elijah stop playing with Sean's blood" and Sean was all, "but I said it was cool, I was like, 'no it's ok, elijah can play with my blood'" [the audience is cracking up at this point] so Elijah explains, that, "it was cool, man, it was like, fascinating." [much laughter]

Q about Queenstown Adventure Capital.
A. Sean and Elijah didn't really do any of the adventurous stuff, although they did go four wheeling once. Elijah says, "I am a pussy." The audience giggles and Sean goes, "all right, raise your hands if you're offended" A few people raise their hands and Elijah giggles. Sean says either, "we tried to warn him" or "we can't take him anywhere" And the audience cracks up.

Q about favorite NZ location.
A. Loved it all Queenstown especially and a city I cannot remember. Lij then says, "I wanna buy a house there, let's do it Sean" And then Sean kinda nodded.

At some point Sean's cell phone rang. He answered it and it was Mackenzie his brother. Elijah wants to talk to Mac. Says hi, tries to get Mac to say hi to the audience, but ends up putting the wrong end of the phone to the mic. Everyone in the audience is quiet, waiting to hear if it works. Nothing. So Sean runs over grabs the phone and says, "Wait Mac, say hello again in five seconds" and he puts the other end of the phone to the mic. And it works. At this point about half the audience was cracking up cause they figured out why it hadn't worked the first time. So Sean opens it up to questions for Mackenzie.

1st question [yelled out]: What's it like to live with Dom?
A. Not nearly as bad as certain other hobbits.

Q about what Sean was like to grow up with.
A. Something about how Sean hasn't exactly grown much and mac is the taller one.

Q who's he gonna vote for in the election?
A Ariana Huffington or Gary Coleman (I think). I yell out that Ariana dropped out a week ago. Sean informs Mac of this. [audience and Sean laugh]

Q about whether Mac is jealous that Sean got the part.
A Sean pulls the phone away really quickly, says something about ending it right there. People in the audience are all talking to each other, and Sean gets off the phone, but not without making sure that everything's ok with Mac.

After getting off the phone Sean tells us that Mackenzie auditioned for Legolas and his Dad for another part. (Gandalf?)

At this point I think there was a question about whether Peter Jackson was going to be putting the auditions on a dvd.
Sean reports that he thinks they're going to be put on one of the dvds, possibly the trilogy box set. There is some discussion of blooper reel possibilities. At one party PJ showed a 15 minute blooper reel, but according to Sean there's "so much more" so that might make it in somewhere too.

Q Hardest scenes to film in movie?
A Sean: Rivendell Council scene because there were so many plotlines and it's a key scene, any fight scene with Gollum, and finally, the Frodo/Sam scene that was just hard because they just had to get it right. [audience: "awwwww", Elijah: "awwww"]

Comment that some woman didn't get to meet Sean on Sunday and was going to, "pull a sickie" on Monday for them. Asks who they would "pull a sickie" for.
A. Sean engages in much repeating of the phrase "pull a sickie". Elijah says that it would probably be someone in music, doesn't get specific. Sean makes Elijah guess his answer, Elijah says that Sean would pull a sickie for the President. Sean says that it would probably be someone political.

Q What character other than the one they played would they most want to be from LotR.
A Sean: Treebeard because then if people messed with the environment he could stomp on them.

Q about Sean having directed an episode of "Angel"
A Sean says that he loved doing it, and had wanted to try directing episodic television for a while, and had happened to meet one of the "Angel" producers and had worked the connection to get the job. Said he hadn't really watched Buffy, but knew that many very talented people had worked on it, so he knew something must be working with the shows. Audience members say that it was their favorite episode of the season. Sean says he really enjoyed it, would love to do another. Joked (half seriously) that we should start a campaign on the internet to get them to have him back.

Q about directing "The Long and the Short of It" why did he feel the need to take on yet another project?
A Sean says that Fon was just this "little touch of feminine beauty on the set each day" and he really wanted to capture that. Especially since the stunt guys and double worked so so hard, and would never really be seen on screen. So he wanted to give them the spotlight, if only for a little while.

Q. Did they stayed true to the book, in the scene where Frodo has everything taken from him.
A. Elijah. Everything? "Wait, hold on a second..." [Elijah gets off his stool turns slightly, bends over a bit, bringing his hands in front of him as if tied, pauses there then stands up again] Answer: not quite everything but almost.

Discussion about book to movie transition. Sean and Elijah ask audience what least favorite difference was.
Audience yells various things. Elijah and Sean pick up on Faramir and say that they've heard that one the most. Said that they're "going to tell Pete about this"

Q about whether they think Tolkien would like the movies.
A Elijah: "well he optioned the movie rights" Sean: that's what Peter always told them, was that Tolkien did option the rights. Sean again mentioned Tolkien's goal of creating a mythology for the British people, and says that he really hopes that he would have like them, but both agree that it's really impossible to say for sure.

Q about keeping in touch with other actors, do they ever watch their movies, have they ever not liked anyone else's work.
A Elijah says that he didn't really like "Pirates" He thought Orlando was good in it, but he didn't really like the movie. Sean says that he loves pirate movies and that he's bitter that "fucking Orlando got the part". After Goonies he's really enjoyed pirate stuff. (note: he was joking about the whole hating Orlando thing)

And finally, the Gay Thing.

Q about seeing stuff on internet, and lurking on forums like TORN and Bit of Earth.
A When billyboyd.net first came out Elijah would leave messages on it, but he stopped doing that quickly, decided it was a lot more fun just to call him. Said that he goes to TORN, but straight to the news section because it keeps him updated about where everyone else is. As far as the internet is concerned, Elijah has seen rumors about him and Dominic being gay, he specifically mentioned the story about Dom dating Hannah so that he could secretly be with Elijah, and the rumor about how they had signed contracts with New Line that restricted them from coming out. He was shaking his head a bit when he recounted that rumor. Elijah said that on set there had been a rumor that all the hobbits were gay and he said that they had played that up all the time afterwards. Elijah looked at Sean and asked what it was about good guy friends that there's always jokes about being gay. Sean looks at the audience, no one answers, and Sean says, "See they don't know either." Sean also says that Sir Ian had "shown them some stuff on the net a long time ago" but that he didn't really think that all these people writing about the different pairings was a big deal, He specifically said that "they aren't hurting anyone".

At some point during the talk Sean was encouraged to "kiss" Elijah. I cannot remember if it was during one of the mushy parts when Elijah was asked who the true hero of the movies were (his answer was Sam) or some other time. At any rate I had the perfect view of it and would like to set the record straight. This is exactly what happened: Sean grabbed Elijah with his left arm, placed his right hand over Elijah's mouth, dipped Elijah into a bow and firmly kissed his own hand. They separated, and Sean went back to his stool, he grinned and said, "that wasn't the first time." Yes it was absolutely adorable. No they did not actually kiss.

It should be noted that the guys were more than a little out of it, they were really tired but hyped up, probably on sugar and the crowd the whole night. They actually ended up staying and answering questions for an extra half hour. Their management wanted them to leave and the audience kind of "awwwed" and Sean and Elijah were like, "well you guys have a movie to watch" and everyone yelled, "we've already seen it" and Lij joked that they "could go all night".

Either at this point or slightly further on in the questions Sean got off his stool and took the mic off it's stand. Elijah noticed and said, "oh so that's how we're doing it now, lounge style" So he got up too, unwrapped his mic, and Sean started singing a bit.

The entire time they kept singing and joking around, it was really obvious that they were having a ton of fun with each other and with the audience. Elijah kept giggling, and every time he did the audience just cooed. And he just loved it. Sean would grin at him when he did that.

And there you have it, every single thing I can remember from the screening. If you were there and think I got something wrong, I'd love to discuss it with you. If you weren't there and have any questions I'll discuss those too. And for god's sakes if you've seen rumors about what happened and they don't match my recap please ask me about it, I'm really sick if reading about stuff that did not actually happen. Rumors are dangerous people, let's keep them to a minimum.

Great write up of what actually happened at the Con! I would have loved to be there. Thanks for making it so detailed. It sounds like Elijah and Sean were extremely entertaining.
