I fucking love Kanye West

cali: (bush is an idiot (altera))
So Kanye West appeared on NBC's Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert and went completely off the teleprompter into what was clearly an emotional and impromptu message about the devastatingly slow efforts of the government to get help to New Orleans. I fucking love him. I mean, I liked Kanye before but watching this, watching someone be so brave in standing up and calling this what it is was incredibly powerful. Also, I'd like to note that NBC edited out the last portion of his comments when they aired the show on the west coast. The fuckers. Also of note, some anchors at FOX News think he should have been censored completely. Seriously, go watch. He totally made me cry. (video from the good folks at crooksandliars)

And now something I'm going to call Reporters Straying from Their Scripts: (videos originally from crooksandliars)

Anderson Cooper, from CNN's Anderson Cooper 360º has been reporting from New Orleans the last few days. In a pretty stunning display of humanism, a lot of the reporters in New Orleans have been getting a lot more personal and a lot more willing to talk about the failures of the government during this crisis. Anderson Cooper interviews Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu and asks her directly, “Does the federal government bear responsibility for what is happening now? Should they apologize for what is happening now?”
[ Anderson Cooper - Sen. Landrieu ] -- wmv, 2.91mb
Anderson Cooper interviewing Trent Lott is even better.
[ Anderson Cooper - Trent Lott ] -- wmv, 7.11mb
CNN's Paula Zahn interviewing FEMA's Director, Mike Brown on Thursday. Paula Zahn: Sir, you're not telling me, you're not telling me you just learned that the folks at the convention center didn't have food and water until today did you? You had no idea they were completely cut off?

FEMA's Brown: Paula, the federal government did not even know about the convention center people until today.
[ Paula Zahn - Mike Brown ] -- wmv, 2.61
Lastly, Ted Koppel interviewing Mike Brown. And dude, Ted Koppel just refuses to let Brown duck the hard questions.
[ Ted Koppel - Mike Brown ] -- mov, 9.07mb
I've gotta say, it's weird to see the mainstream media news anchors straying from the status quo like this. Really disorienting.

There's a very interesting article on this over at Slate that you guys should read.

What did Kanye say and what was it edited to? Or did they just edit out that whole last line about Bush? I downloaded it last night and I heard him say "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and saw Mike Meyers looking hella freaked out and they cut to someone else.

They took out the last line, the one about Bush not caring about black people.

Figures. Is it bad of me that I laughed really loudly at the look on Mike's face when Kanye said that?

Hell no! Oh man I love it when people are presenting with someone else and they stray from the script. The other person ends up looking so uncomfortable and so confused about whether they should continue on with their lines or not. Mike's face was hilarious.

You nerd. *g* I wasn't paying attention to the dl speed, but I'll let you know the next time. Seriously, that 9 MB file took like 3 seconds on cable.

Hee! I'm just too curious about this stuff. I need to make sure the host is going to work out before it's too late to get a refund.

Downloaded Koppel and am gonna download the others as well. I read the transcript of Kanye's impromptu speech. The sad thing is that there's probably some truth to it, though I tend to think class is as much of a issue if not more in this instance as race. Poor is poor, no matter how you cut it. And they should have had a hell of a lot more assistance.

You should definitely download the Kanye clip if you've only read the transcript. He, you know, he did address the idea of poverty before he said the thing about George Bush. But I think he was so nervous and so upset that he just blurted the second thing out. Class definitely has a lot to do with it, but the racist aspect of it, in my opinion, comes in when you realize that most poor people are people of color because of that fact, because they have no access to better opportunities and no resources to get out of their situations. I wish that aspect of the story was being talked about more but I doubt it will. And either way, you're completely right, more should have been done and a whole lot sooner.

Thanks for these clips. I grabbed the Kanye and Ted Koppel bits. Big props to Kanye for saying what everyone is really thinking.

You're welcome. I think it took a lot of courage for Kanye to say what he did.

HOWEVER, right after, someone working the Red Cross phone bank said people were calling to cancel their donations. YIKES :-(

Not at all. God I just keep tearing up at that first line of his. I hate the way they portray us in the media. Christ. He was just trying so hard to reach out to people and make them get that this isn't just about people suffering indiscriminantly.

Also, much love to Kayne. My response to his critics? Yeah, he said it. Don't tell me he is wrong. Prove. It.

I was linked from... um... somewhere. [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen, I think.
When I try to save, nothing happens, and when I try to just open the file it says "You don't have permission to access to this document on this server." Any ideas as to what I could do to fix this? I really appreciate your linking the clips and I'd like to see them! Thanks.

That's really weird. I've uploaded the files to yousendit for you, hopefully these ones will work, if not let me know:

Kanye West

Anderson Cooper - Sen. Landrieu

Anderson Cooper - Trent Lott

CNN's Paula Zahn - FEMA'a Mike Brown

Ted Koppel - Mike Brown

Oh, it looks like the two Cooper clips are the same link. Is the Landrieu one uploaded? (If this is too much of a pain in the ass, it's totally fine and don't worry about it and really I appreciate what you've already done.)

Here's the right link for the Landrieu interview. I'm going to look into the possibilities for why the downloads wouldn't work for you in the first place.

I grabbed Kayne as well. Thank you. I had to use the YSI link because I had the same problem as [livejournal.com profile] sluggirl had. But I'm at work so it might be some stupid company block.

That's really weird, if you get a chance could you try downloading from home and tell me if you're still getting the same problem? Also the link for Anderson Cooper's interview with Senator Landrieu was wront here is the correct link.

On second thought, I think it might be a Firefox issue. I just tried to get the Kanye clip in IE and it worked fine.
