Have you got a shoe? Something heavy? Bug spray? I would spray it, and when its defences are down, squash it.

[livejournal.com profile] abisgirl has always solved that problem by putting a glass over the top of them and leaving it there until a) I come home and kill it for her, or b) it starves to death and leaves a desicated corpse under glass for me to find later.

That's what I do, too, but I usually have to slide a piece of paper under the cup and flip it over and then move the glass out of the way so the cat doesn't get it in case it happens to be a poisonous cat killing bug.

The other option is to flail and scream and cry a bit.

EEEEEWWWWWWWW! If it's just a large normal bug like a cicada, then just smush it with a shoe or spray it - the glass and paper trick works too.

If it's a roach, you are TOTALLY on your own, and I am incredibly glad I'm on the other side of the world. *nods*

Probably way belated, but as someone who does have experience with massive massive roaches, don't bother with a shoe. It won't be heavy or hard enough, and then it'll skittle away from under the shoe, possibly toward you. Use something *big* and *heavy* - a huge glass jar of something, or a brick, or whatever you have around the house. If there's nothing that works like that, see if you have a Swifter (those flat-bottomed cleaning things that you put a damp pad around to mop). They're not much more effective than shoes, but they mean that you can jab at the bugs from a distance. :-)

Good luck. Roaches suck.
